5 Steps to Longer Lasting Vase Life of Cut Flowers
One thing is clear: we live in a hectic world that affects us one way or another. A classic adage to “stop and smell the roses” is a simple tip but has a deeper meaning to stop and be in the moment of nature and beauty. And now you can have your own moment with a fresh cut flower bouquet nearby on your dinner table or an office desk.
The following are 5 steps to prolong vase life of fresh cut flowers, either store bought or field grown, so one can enjoy them to the fullest.
1. While holding the flower bouquet in your hand, trim off 1 inch of each stem at a 45-degree angle. Trimming off stems refreshes the pathways for better water absorption by both the stem and flower.
2. If needed, remove all leaves that will be below water level. Leaves in the water are a perfect breeding ground for bacteria, thus lowering the vase life.
3. Fill a well-cleaned vase with a pint of cool water, add half of the flower food packet. Mix well.
4. Add the bouquet to the vase or arrange it to your own liking. Keep it away from the direct sunlight or direct heat source.
5. On day 3, pour out the water, rinse or wash the vase, add fresh water with the remaining half of packet of flower food. Then repeat steps 1 to 4. Note: if no flower food available, it is recommended to change water daily.
Enjoy that gorgeous flower bouquet to the fullest, remembering to take your time in stopping and smelling the flowers.
